Invisalign & Clear Aligners

Clear aligner therapy has transformed orthodontic treatment for many patients — offering an effective, discreet, and comfortable path to a better smile. For the right patient, in the right clinical situation, with consistent wear, aligners can deliver excellent results. At Kuhlberg Orthodontics, we offer clear aligner treatment because we believe in it — and we recommend it honestly, only when it is genuinely the best choice for the person in front of us.

Is Aligner Therapy Right for You?

Before diving into how aligners work, it's worth asking the most important question first. Aligners and braces are different treatment tools with different strengths — and the choice between them matters more than most patients realize. If you're weighing aligners against braces, we'd encourage you to read our Clear Ceramic Braces page, where we discuss that comparison honestly and in detail. The short version: aligners are an excellent choice for the right patient, but they require a level of compliance that braces do not, and their mechanical properties differ from metal wires in ways that affect certain tooth movements. We will always tell you which option gives you the best chance of an efficient, effective outcome — and sometimes that means recommending braces over aligners, even when a patient arrives hoping for the latter. If aligners are the right choice for your situation, we'll tell you that too — with confidence.

How Aligners Work

Clear aligners are a series of custom-made, removable trays that guide teeth gradually into improved alignment. Each tray is worn for a prescribed period — typically one to two weeks — before progressing to the next stage. The trays are nearly invisible at conversational distance, can be removed for eating and oral hygiene, and are generally comfortable to wear. The treatment is planned digitally — tooth movements are mapped out in sequence before the first tray is ever made. That digital plan is only as good as the orthodontic thinking behind it. Programming movement into software does not guarantee predictable results. What matters is whether the plan respects biology, sequences movements correctly, and is monitored and adjusted as treatment progresses.Compliance is the other essential ingredient. Aligners must be worn 20 to 22 hours per day to work as planned. Every hour out of the mouth is an hour not moving teeth. For patients who wear them consistently, treatment proceeds efficiently and predictably. For patients who don't, results suffer — and treatment extends. The aligners do not work on their own. The patient is an active participant in the outcome.

Planning, Oversight, and In-House Capabilities

Successful aligner treatment depends far more on planning and clinical oversight than on the brand of aligner used. At Kuhlberg Orthodontics, aligner treatment is guided by the same biomechanical principles that inform every treatment we provide — careful diagnosis, thoughtful sequencing of tooth movement, and ongoing evaluation at every visit. We use digital scanning and treatment simulation to plan and communicate treatment clearly — you will be able to see the projected movement of your teeth before treatment begins. Our in-house capabilities allow for greater flexibility and faster refinements when adjustments are needed along the way.Every aligner patient is monitored closely throughout treatment. When something isn't tracking as planned — a tooth not moving as expected, a refinement needed — we address it promptly. Clear aligners require active management, not passive observation.

When Clear Aligners Are the Right Choice

Aligners are particularly well suited for adults and teens with mild to moderate alignment concerns who are genuinely motivated to wear them consistently. They are an excellent option for patients whose professional or social circumstances make discretion a priority, and whose clinical situation is compatible with what aligner mechanics can reliably deliver. They are not the right choice for every patient or every clinical situation. Complex tooth movements, significant bite corrections, and cases requiring precise biomechanical control may be better served by braces. After your evaluation, we will discuss all of your treatment options and their pros and cons. Together we will determine what is the best treatment for you.For patients who are good aligner candidates, the experience is genuinely excellent. Comfortable, discreet, and compatible with daily life — with results that can be outstanding when the plan is well designed and the commitment is there.
